Pharmacy Education Unit

Pharmacy Education Unit:

The Pharmacy Education Unit (PUE) ensures successful development, delivery, assessment, and continuous improvement of the curriculum. The head of the unit reports to the Dean directly.

Tasks:

  • Oversees successful delivery of the curriculum. 
  • Ensure the program learning outcomes (PLO) are achieved through designing and implementing a program-wide assessment plan.
  • Coordinate between the academic departments to ensures the curriculum harmonization and integration through a systematic and standardized approaches.
  • Implement and disseminate policies, procedures, and standards related to education as approved by the college PharmD program Joint committee.
  • Document and track curriculum information
  • Promote research in pharmacy education to produce scientifically sound information to guide the development of learning and teaching.
  • Coordinate and design faculty development to support continuous improvement in teaching and assessment.

  1. Course Management division 

 

This division is responsible for coordinating between all divisions of the pharmacy education unit.  Coordinating with the departments to nominate the course directors and submit it to the PJC for approval. Coordinate with the course directors to fulfil their tasks, follow up with the faculty  selection. follow up with the course approval process ( new courses) , coordinate regarding the elective courses with the academic affairs.

 

  1. Assessment division: 

This division is responsible for organizing, and analyzing data associated with measurable  program outcomes  that are  guided by the mission and goals of the University and the College.  To promote improvements in the delivery of the curriculum and supports the curriculum committee in evaluating educational outcomes and  disseminate lessons learned through regular review of evaluation and assessment data.

The division oversees the exam centre, student portfolios, OSCE/ mile marker examinations, Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment, Saudi Pharmacist Licensure Examination result analysis  and Course , faculty  evaluation by students and course  report review  process.

 

  1. Student Portfolio  and soft skills development division ( culture):  

KSU pharmacy college graduates are ready to work pharmacist equipped with all soft skills required. This division :

  • Ensures the integration of pharmaceutical sciences in practice through designing proper learning and assessment tools
  • Ensure adequate coverage of all competencies throughout the curriculum.
  • Consult with individual course directors to evaluate whether the distribution of competencies among courses is logical and coherent.
  • Coordinate with other units in the college ( community , innovation ,students clubs,…etc) to implement and map the PLOs through their programs
  • This division works continuously to identify  and review skills required in the workplace and inject them properly in the curriculum. The following skills are the basic  essential skills from the program learning outcomes:

Student portfolios will be collected through one drive with the coordination of the student Academic guidance unit.

Representative examples of student work will be collected  from each semester providing evidence of  student progress of  target competences through the curriculum. An important component of the portfolio is student reflections to illustrate common strengths and weaknesses.

 

  1. Faculty support division: 

 

  • Coordinate and Design faculty  training programs and ensuring excellence in teaching, knowledge transfer and innovation in pharmacy education.
  • Developing an environment that enforces excellence in teaching and supporting faculty members in achieving its objectives.
  • Advising faculty members on core technologies that support course delivery ( Black Board)
  • Providing support to faculty members to implement new technologies and learning approaches in the classroom
  • Promote the design and implementation of innovative teaching and assessment methods.
  • Integrate  problem-based education to the curriculum through  designing   cases/learning activities  with proper learning outcomes mapped to the PLOs ,cooperate with faculty members, evaluate the educational process and collect feedback from students and faculty members.
  • Monitor lab manuals  dissemination and check their quality with the coordination of the lab committee.
  1. Educational Research  division

Promote research in pharmacy education to produce scientifically sound information to guide the development of learning and teaching and strategic decision making about the curriculum and PharmD degree program.

 

PharmD program Joint committee (PJC)

The PJC  is a Committee  that functions  under the pharmacy education unit. The PJC provides oversight of the PharmD program by managing and overseeing the educational process based on the university's policies and regulations. The PharmD program Joint committee

 is responsible for evaluating  and improving the program before the dean. All proposed significant changes to the PharmD curriculum must be submitted to the PJC for approval.

Members are assigned by the Vice Dean of the Educational And Academic Affairs of King Saud University . The members are representatives from all five academic departments and the training unit. PJC meets a minimum of three meeting each semester. Communicate with the dean and heads of departments concerned with everything related to the educational process.

PharmD program Joint committee objectives:

  • Coordinate between the academic departments to ensure the curriculum harmonization and integration through a systematic and standardized approaches.
  • Assure the proper utilization of the faculty expertise and specializations in teaching.
  • Meet the renewable needs locally and globally in pharmacy education.
